First off, you gotta understand, Gucci’s been around for a CENTURY. A whole hundred years! And to celebrate, they decided to, like, *actually* get serious about watches. I mean, seriously SERIOUS. Like, “high watchmaking collection” serious. Which, frankly, kinda surprised me. I always thought of Gucci watches as, well, kinda…fashion-y. You know? Pretty, but not exactly ticking masterpieces.
But then they came out with this Handmaster Automatic thing, and suddenly they’re talking about in-house calibers. CALIBERS! Like, actual watch nerd stuff. The GG727.25T, apparently. A Swiss-made automatic flying tourbillon. Okay, okay, Gucci, I see you. 3.70mm thick (4.85 if you count the whole tourbillon cage situation) and a 60-hour power reserve. Not too shabby, not too shabby at all. Though, ngl, those numbers kinda go right over my head. I just like shiny things that tell time accurately.
Which brings me to the…slightly confusing part. Because, like, *most* of their watches, especially the women’s ones, apparently use Swiss quartz movements. Which is, you know, reliable. And low-maintenance. Which is cool! But not exactly groundbreaking. So you got this super fancy, in-house automatic stuff happening, and then… quartz. It’s a bit of a disconnect, right? Like, they’re trying to be taken seriously *and* cater to the crowd that just wants a pretty Gucci watch. I get it, business is business, but still. It’s like wearing a diamond tiara with sweatpants, you know? (Not that I wouldn’t do that, BTW.)
And THEN there’s the Gucci Dive! I’m totally digging the sporty vibe. Swiss automatic movement, 200m water resistance – that’s actually pretty impressive. Plus, they’re using bio-based materials! Go Gucci, being all eco-conscious! So, you’ve got this eco-friendly sporty watch, a bunch of fancy tourbillon stuff, and then… the regular quartz watches. It’s a mish mash.
Oh, and Drew Jewellers are selling these new 40mm automatics in steel with blue or black dials. Seems solid, but nothing about it is really jumping out at me, ya know?
